Kurwa chauth is an interesting festival,celebrated in North India. The fast is kept by all the married ladies.
It usually falls in the month of october or November. It is exactly on the tenth day after Dussera.
Keeping a whole day fast,without eating and drinking anything is the main feature.It is believed that by keeping this fast the husbands would be bestowed with a long and healthy lives. There are many stories related to the fast.
Not only fasting,the woman dress up in thier best. Mehndi is applied on both hands. Basically it is dressing up like a bride, with colourful bangles,sindhur and jewellery etc.
The fast starts at the break of the dawn. And a special array of sweets and things are eaten before the fast begins and that is called sargi. Sargi is generally given by the mother- in -law which consists of fruits,sweets like vermiceli kheer,nuts etc. and the accessories for styling.
Its is only before dusk that the ladies form groups and do puja . Each one has a kuwra ,a small pot filled with water and a thali decorated with fruits and mattri. And nuts to be given to the MIL.
are rotated seven times. A diya or small lamp is places on the thali.
After the puja the ladies wait for the moon to rise ,they see the moon and break the fast.On seeing the moon ,ark with water and sweet is given to the moon . The lady sees the moon through a sieve.
Now she breaks the fast by having a sweet or coconut or coconut water.
