Ganesh Chaturti is a great festival celebrated by  the Hindus all over India. Accordi ng to the Hindu calendar every year  this festival is celebrated during the September month on the fourth day of the bhadrapaksh. .
Ganesha was the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati.  This day  is the birthday of Ganesha. It is celebrated for ten days starting on the first day that is Ganesh Chaturthi.

Idols of Lord Ganesha made of clay, in different colours and sizes are sold in the markets.  On the Ganesh Chaturthi, the idols are placed at home or in pandals   and worshipped  by offering prayers.  The idols are decorated with lights, flowers . sweets of different types, especially  ladoos and modaks are offered. It is believed that Ganesh was very fond of ladoos.

It is believed that Lord Ganesha destroys obstacles of our life and brings peace and prosperity in life.

According to a story, Mother Parvati gave birth to a sweet boy, named him Ganesha and asked him to guard her, while she went for a  bath, while Lord Shiva was away. When he returned Ganesha stopped him from entering the house.  This made Lord Shiva furious and his anger was uncontrollable.   Lord Siva took his weapon Trishul cut Ganesha ' s head.

When Parvati saw this she was very angry and with the help of other Gods, Brahma and Vishnu brought him back to life and positioned an elephants head on his body.

Lord Ganesh is kept at home and worshipped for ten days. On the tenth day, a procession is taken out, with great enthusiasm and fun. People dance on the streets  and the  festival ends when the statue is immersed in a river or sea.  The popular belief is that   Ganesha will return to his  home at Mount Kailash , the abode of Lord Shiva and  Parvati.  People Chant Ganpati papa maurya  and immerse the idol.
